Tracy’s Tips: Pool Cover Storage

Tracy’s Tips: Pool Cover Storage

When the time comes to open your pool and store the cover for the season, here are a few tips to help maintain its integrity while in storage.

First, when you remove the cover, we find it helpful to remove and lubricate the deck anchors before putting them back in the ground.  This preserves the life of the anchors and makes for an easier time getting them back up in the fall!  We use a mix of water and WD40 or an equivalent lubricant!

Most safety covers are mesh and can be folded and placed in the mesh storage bag while still damp. However, if you’re storing your cover in a plastic bin, make sure it is fully dry to avoid mold.

Store your cover in an elevated location, if possible. Safety covers are very heavy, so be sure your rack or shelf can handle the weight. Storing your cover on the ground invites rodents and bugs to use it as a home—and chew holes through it. No one wants that costly surprise when they go to put the cover back on in the fall!

Plastic storage bins are ideal for pool cover storage. Choose a large enough bin with a tight-fitting lid. If you’re using a bag instead, hang it high off the floor.

We recommend adding mothballs or a similar rodent deterrent to the bin with your pool cover. Pro tip: Place the mothballs in a large sock to keep them contained and prevent a mess on your pool deck when you take the cover out later.
